Evaluation of Various Turbulence Models in Predicting Airflow and 1 Turbulence in Enclosed Environments by CFD: Part-1: 2 Summary of Prevalent Turbulence Models 3 4 Zhiqiang Zhai Zhao Zhang Wei Zhang Qingyan Chen 5 Member ASHRAE Student Member ASHRAE Member ASHRAE Fellow ASHRAE 6 7 Air distributions in enclosed environments are crucial to thermal comfort and air quality. 8 Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been playing an important role in evaluating and 9 designing various air distributions. Many factors can have influence on the applications of CFD 10 for studying air distributions. The most critical factors are the selection of an appropriate CFD 11 approach and a turbulence model. Recent advances in CFD approaches and turbulence models 12 provide a great potential of improving prediction accuracy of air distributions in enclosed 13 environments. This paper summarized recent progress in CFD turbulence modeling and 14 applications to some practical indoor environment studies. This paper also described the 15 turbulence models that either are commonly used or have been proposed and used recently for 16 indoor environment modeling. Finally, this study further identified a few turbulence models that 17 show great potential for modeling airflows in enclosed environments. A companion paper 18 presents the evaluation of the selected models by using experimental data from the literature. 19

Numerical Predictions of Turbulent Mixed Convection Heat Transfer to Supercritical Fluids Using Various Low Reynolds Number k-e Turbulence Models

There are a number of systems in which supercritical cryogenic fluids are used as coolants or propellant fluids. In some modern military aircraft, the fuel is pressurized above its critical point and used as a coolant to remove heat from the aircraft engine. Accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficients to turbulent flows of supercritical fluids is essential in design of such systems. One o...

Internal combustion engines in cylinder flow simulation improvement using nonlinear k-ε turbulence models

The purpose of this paper is to studying nonlinear k-ε turbulence models and its advantages in internal combustion engines, since the standard k-ε model is incapable of representing the anisotropy of turbulence intensities and fails to express the Reynolds stresses adequately in rotating flows. Therefore, this model is not only incapable of expressing the anisotropy of turbulence in an engine c...

Comparison of different turbulence models in a high pressure fuel jet

In this study, modeling of a fuel jet which has been injected by high pressure into a low-pressure tank are investigated. Due to the initial conditions and the geometry of this case and similar cases (like CNG injectors in internal combustion engines (ICE)), the barrel shocks and Mach disk are observed. Hence a turbulence and transient flow will be expected with lots of shocks and waves. Accord...

The effect of turbulence model on predicting the development and progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis

A severe case of stenosis in coronary arteries results in turbulence in the blood flow which may lead to the formation or progression of atherosclerosis. This study investigated the turbulent blood flow in a coronary artery with rigid walls, as well as 80% single and double stenoses on blood flow. A finite element-based software package, ADINA 8.8, was employed to model the blood flow. The hemo...

Comparison of the Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for predicting particle transport in enclosed spaces

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods has been widely used in modeling particle transport and distribution in enclosed spaces. Generally, the particle models can be classified as either Eulerian or Lagrangian methods while each has its own pros and cons. This investigation is to compare the two modeling methods with an emphasis on their performance of predicting particle concentration ...
